Description

Hailed as one of the oldest professions practiced by man, journalism has always been contributing significantly to the progress and development of nations, societies and individuals by acting as their collective conscience. It is imperative then to turn our attention to those towering personalities who have contributed to the journalism profession. I think it is our moral responsibility to acknowledge their hard work, sacrifices and commendable contributions to the field of journalism. We must bear in mind that journalism in India was not merely a profession of disseminating information but a part of the broader design to attain independence by adopting the pen as a mighty weapon to fight against the exploitation and atrocities of the British government, and other social evils deeply entrenched within the Indian society. Our history is replete with examples of many committed journalists from the pre-independence era who took the journalism profession to be their lives’ mission. Journalism was an instrument to ignite in the people a flaring passion for the Indian freedom movement. With a clear vision of complete independence and adherence to high level of journalistic standards and ethics, these stalwarts wrote to arouse in a slumbering people a true sense of patriotism, nationalism and a longing for self-government. They did never compromise with professional honesty and worked fearlessly for the sake of the people and social and national interests. To me, these were the real heroes and legends of Indian journalism who stirred an entire nation through their powerful pens to rise up to the British Raj.
