As we recede further from our past, the interest in the by-gone era increases by leaps and bounds. To unearth anything related to history involves collection of facts. These facts have to be laboriously compiled with persistence and a searching mind. The search might begin from the modern internet and then take you through tattered journals, old books, libraries and finally on a walking exploration where you have to move around lanes and by-lanes of the city and talking to locals. The joy of such discovery are multifarious. As an add-on challenge, the boundaries of Kolkata had changed several times and it has grown more and more like a fast growing baby. Gathering information on etymological origins is a daunting task. Some of the sources are well cataloged; others may have to be derived from allied material. Then there is information which is only available by word of mouth and where no systematic documentation has been done. The book also attempts to collect information and history of places to visit in Kolkata. A lot of residents of the city are not aware of the history of the various places in Kolkata which they are very familiar and might have visited on several excursions. This book tries to collate the information about icons of Kolkata (the elements which are synonymous with the city), its ghats, the religious places, the traditional shopping destinations, iconic places to eat and then some offbeat destinations of the city.
