Description
About the book
Increased competition coupled with commercialization in the Microfinance sector has brought about many major transformations. From an impact driven development program, microfinance institutions today emerged as commercially oriented profit making entities. In addition to bringing their commercial and social objectives into balance, MFIs today are striving for cost-efficient operations. Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), unlike other financial institutions are required not only to cater to social objectives to reach the poor and excluded mass of population but are also required to remain financially sustainable. This poses challenges for performance evaluation of MFIs as MFIs may be financially stable but not socially stable and vice-versa. Thus it is necessary to evaluate performance of MFIs from both the forefronts. This book describes the evolution of MFIs in global as well as Indian perspective. It outlines the role of MFIs especially in developing countries like India and Bangladesh. The prime focus of the book is to assess financial and social performance of MFIs in India and Bangladesh. Besides, the book also includes evaluation of efficiency of MFIs in both the countries. The book is of special importance to researchers and policy makers as it provides an overall understanding of the current state of affairs and the challenges featuring the sector. The thrust of this book is on “competition” as owing to increased competition in the sector there have been enormous changes in the orientation and means of operation of the MFIs. Also the book includes the latest concepts like up scaling, downscaling and greenfield microfinance institutions. The book is research based where secondary data from various sources are reported based on which the analysis is carried out. It includes the state of the art analytical techniques for empirical analysis. The uniqueness of the book is that it includes three broader aspect of performance evaluation of MFIs, covers MFIs from India and Bangladesh for cross country comparison and most importantly delves into the impact of competition.
