ABOUT THE BOOK

Spoken English, in contrast to written English, aims at more comprehensive expressions in more concise and lucid style. Here grammatical norms, though not followed in too strict a way, cannot be overridden outright. It just focuses on a quick exhibition of mood swings, involving the use of certain phrases and formulas termed as spoken or colloquial formulas. Spoken English, apart from its formula based exposition, could be characterized by general sentences, though the syntactic patterns are cut short through omission of some words without any grammatical oversight. In dialogues and an exchange of pleasantries, too, Spoken English alone has its own relevance. So if classified, it can open up three categories –(1) Colloquial formulas (2) Curtailed general sentences (3) Dialogues and pleasantries. Over and above them there are quite some semi-colloquial expressions, too, which give vent to a speaker’s moods in conversations. Attempts will be made to make certain that colloquial phrases and semi-colloquial ones go together. And they will be arranged in an alphabetical order. Other parts of Spoken English, as distinct from the formula based expressions, will involve a wide range of grammatical items, although, as indicated above, they will fall well short of those complicated imperatives, which are typically allied with the written English.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nirmal Kumar Banerjee was born on 27 July, 1967 into a highly educated family. His parents were both doctors. His source of inspiration has, however, been his beloved mother, who is still imbued with passion for seeing her son become the pride of the literary world. And on that score she always worked much harder than she could really have done. He started his schooling in a small town of Buxar in the state of Bihar in India, continuing with his education along promising avenues ever after till he forged a rewarding career of teaching as a social platform to follow his teaching instinct, to which he, to his deep satisfaction, kind of chaperoned a huge mass of students for the best of his life on various important forums of intellectual and social interactions. Besides, his daughter, Jyotsana’s contributions in terms of lending her invaluable support of awakening his intellectual passion, such as offering him fresh insights into many domains, unexplored and unfrequented, tracked down but left uncovered through serious and wilful neglect, of social problems of diverse human interests are more laudable than words can express.
