Syria, one of the continuous inhabiting pieces of human settlement in the Middle East, had been the centre of various world powers throughout history. But unfortunately, the same land has been ravaged by the catastrophic civil war that started with the Arab Spring of 2011. The book describes the entire event of how a peaceful protest movement against the Assad regime metamorphosed in a full-fledged civil war. The author explores various socio-political, socio-economic reasons that caused widespread dissatisfaction against the regime and finally culminated into a violent civil war. The book provides a deep insight into the history, colonial legacy and dictatorial regime which profoundly affected and shaped the destiny of current Syria. It also discusses the geopolitics of the Syrian conflict and explains the range of factors, super and regional power’s proxies, sectarian conflicts, complex demography of the Syrian state in great details. The author tries to deconstruct the oversimplified narration that only emphasizes on sectarian nature of the Syrian conflict by providing an overall picture of the conflict through multiple dynamics.

Md Amanullah Ansari is a postgraduate student at MMAJ Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in English journalism from Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, New Delhi.
