Book Review:
“Towards Growth” is an inspiring read on the need of taking appropriate action while starting anything in life. Be it getting up in the morning till setting up a business. Divided into eleven parts the book addresses some very critical points that are to be taken care of and thought about.
Being successful in life is not an easy task but is possible only with a great amount of dedication and will power. The author explains this in a very pragmatic approach. The Try-Fail-Learn-Success point is worth mentioning. Somewhere deep down I understood that a complete lifestyle depends on these 4 steps. Kudos to the author for imbibing this approach.
In the first chapter, he clearly explains the difference between a Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset. He also to an extent says every person is taught everything in a fixed arena of beliefs that lead to a fixed mindset. If the child doesn’t realize this and continues with the same his life will take different turns. Narrating in the first person author takes a new way of explaining the concepts. In this chapter, the negativities of fixed mindsets are explained coherently.
In the second chapter, named Failure which is the most dangerous yet to be talked about topic, the author presents his readers with examples of famous people from varied fields in and around the world and explains how failures made them strong. He invariably explains that failures are always the stepping stones to success when one will never back after failing for ‘n’ number of times where n can be >=1 and so on. Be it about Messi, or Walsh or J.K.Rowling, the author has very neatly explained how knowing about the success stories of these people who rose to fame after many failures made up into the world.
As per a saying by Buddha, “the mind is everything that you think you become,” and this is the central tenet of the book. It is all a mind game and the most important aspect in life is to know how to go about placing your mind in the right place to stride forward in the right direction. In this very context, the following chapters of habits and consistency really act as a good guide for inculcating motivation, dedication, and courage.
There are some small yet effective topics of making choices, accepting criticism and let go are illustrated well. Though habit is a small word, the author has explained very deeply about habits. This is one of the very few books I read where a small general concept is explained very keenly.
With real and fictional examples, in chapter Rockbottom there is a lesson to be learned on staying dedicated to the choices one makes. In every chapter, author Sumanth mentions that one must live in the present at all times, take reasonability of the choices made and stay focused without procrastinating anything. He with examples very strongly further elucidates how the mind works and how one should train their mindsets.
It is crucial to understand that the mindset and its thoughts play an important role in shaping one’s character, circumstances, and destiny. The positive, negative, unnecessary and necessary thoughts comprise the mind that is to be curbed at any point. The other chapters Lost, Child, Happiness, and Relationship put forward many important things that are useful in one’s life.
With an easy language the book is easy to read. I recommend the book to everyone as the book suits for a reader of any age.
