ABOUT THE BOOK

Wild lilies in the backyard is a tale of a family in the village Kotehra in Palandhari in the undivided J&K that gets caught in the partition riots of 1947 in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir and goes through unspeakable horrors that the partition visited on the subcontinent. The travails of the family begin when the son of Pandit Kishan Chand, a highly respected man in Kotehra, falls prey to religious fanaticism in present day Pakistan. Pandit Kishan Chand travels to Jammu in November 1947 and pays with his life when he tries to stop the rioters from killing a few innocent Muslims. Bhagat, his youngest son, barely manages to survive along with his love interest, Fatima, a Muslim Girl, at Thathyal in Mirpur. The tale of the family is one of loss, resilience and hope. Wild lilies are poisonous and can potentially do harm, if allowed to grow in the backyards. The killers during the partition riots were not the outsiders; they were amongst the closest neighbours and friends. They were the wild lilies that had overrun the backyards of those they attacked and killed.
