About the book
Life in a blossoming small town in Bihar is portrayed through the eyes of Mamai Tata, a young girl who left her home in Bombay to follow her dreams. She follows her husband Homi to Jamshedpur where he had carved a life for himself, working in The Tata Iron and Steel Co. Their story goes hand-in-hand with the growth of the town. The Founder, Jamshetji Nusserwanji Tata was committed to the idea of setting up an Iron and Steel Company to propel India to economic prosperity. It was conceptualized in the vivid imagination of one individual. The Plant that dominates the city skyline, is more than a source of employment, it is the heartbeat of Jamshedpur as interpreted by Mamai. The general impression of the people was one of implicit devotion, faith and great regard for the Tatas who evinced their whole-hearted commitment towards their workers. The everyday simple life of the common people enfolds in a way that captures the imagination of the reader. Though it was a small town the people were open to new ideas and change. It was a progressive society where Family values, honesty, integrity, kindness and brotherhood were inbuilt in these people who came to learn and work from all ends of India, Bihar, Bengal, from far away Punjab and Madras. They were welded into a nation. The people had total respect for each others community and they all worked together towards one goal – the building of a cosmopolitan society in this new town. Every new member was welcomed with open arms and became a part and parcel of this society as happened in the life of Mamai. Once here, no one wanted to leave this ideal home. In these pages Mamai provides insight into the ten golden years in her life. This is also the story of all young people who were adventurous and who came to seek their destiny away from their birthplace.
