Description
“Ayurveda, as the Indian system of medicine accepted worldwide, is the first formed medical science. Hence it deserves the title, ‘MOTHER OF ALL MEDICAL SYSTEMS’. Ancient ayurvedic preacher Charaka describes the origin of Ayurveda as follows:
‘A human being, even with longevity, faces restrains in fulfilling moral deeds (purushaartha) such as meditation, fasting, learning, celibacy etc. As a solution to this, the Maharishis (enlightened saints), out of their ardency towards the living beings, held a congregate at the Himalayan mountain valley. Prominent saints among them were Angirass, Jamadagni, Vasishta, Aatreya, Bharadwaaja and many more. Discussions and collective meditations made them realize, that medical education, in its absolute form has not been commenced on the earth. Even though the creator, Brahma, has devised it, it has been confined among the Gods in heaven. Brahma instructed it to DakshaPrajapati, he in turn passed the knowledge to AshwiniKumaras, and from them Lord Indra studied it. So the only way to bring it to earth is to acquire it from Lord Indra. So the congregate unanimously bestowed this mission on MaharshiBharadwaaja, as he was found the most suitable’.
He approached Lord Indra and took ample time to comprehend Ayurveda. After that, he reached earth and elucidated other saints. Later the altruistic saint, PunarvasuAathreya preached the holy Ayurveda to six disciples, namely Agnivesha, Bhela, Jatukarna, Parasara, Haariita and Kshaarapani. Each of these disciples wrote their own treatise on Ayurveda called Samhitas. Through these Samhitas, medicine passionate individuals, learned Ayurveda and taught Ayurveda to those who preferred longevity so as to fulfillPursharthas. This was the early precedent of Ayurvedic education.
Taking into account the fact that the above said narration was adopted because of the religious beliefs of a particular period, we can conclude that, Ayurveda is definitely the first medical system in the world i.e. “Mother of all Medical Systems’’. Even many historians acknowledge it. Contrary to primitive physicians who were ignorant of body anatomy, herbal actions and usages, Ayurveda became a learning subject in the renowned ancient Indian universities such as Takshasila and Kasi. This was followed by higher studies in its eight branches (Ashtaanga), leading to their historic treatises. At present every state in India has Ayurvedic colleges offering and advancing, graduate, post graduate and PhD courses under the medical university. Foreign invasion, paved the way for introduction of other medical systems in India, and in the process of ruination of India, Ayurveda was also engulfed. From such a destructive era, Ayurveda has risen up and emerged currently as a relevant medical system, spreading its roots all around the globe.
The outstanding fundamentality of Ayurveda is it’s nature akin principles. Man and nature are not dissimilar: one is a part of the other. Hence for health protection and treatment, it’s important to use materials from the nature itself, as both are made up of the same fundamental building factors, only the quantitative ratio difference matters. It’s not only plants, animals and minerals that are advised in Ayurveda for treatment usages!, Then, what else?. Wind, rain, rivers, mountains, lands, seasons, sun, moon, stars all these have been explained for the purpose by ayurvedic scholars. These findings in an abridged form, incorporated with necessary modern science, is being presented by Dr.Jyothilal, in this book. We are confident that the subject matter in this book will amaze you and will incite your curiosity.”
