Description
Power Systems are designed to supply electric power to consumers. One of the major requirements is that the supply should be uninterrupted. Interruption occurs where circuit breaker(s) disconnect the consumer. The most important reason for this is breakdown of insulation anywhere in the system causing short circuit. For reliable power supply one needs to eliminate breakdown of insulation in the system. The breakdown of insulation is due to high electric stress owing to very high voltages in the system. The root cause for this over voltage much above the normal system voltage, is lightning and internal switching, commonly known as lightning and switching surges. Understanding of these surges is extremely important to system designers. The incentive is to design system insulation so that breakdown and associated outage can be kept to a minimum. Another incentive is to design suitable protective devices in the system in a logical coordinated manner. The analysis of these over-voltages due to the surges is extremely involved with mathematical cumbersomeness. The present book has been written in a lucid manner to describe the origin of these surges, nature and characteristics of over-voltages and design of protective devices in a coordinated fashion. The book avoids rigorous and cumbersome mathematical treatment of the subject and depends upon the approximations of mathematical description with a view to have a sound physical understanding. The book is intended for senior level undergraduate and post graduate students pursuing Power System specialization to understand the involved subject in a systematic and lucid manner.
