This excellent volume was written in Connection with the William Carey Centenary Celebrations held by the William Carey Study and Research Centre (WCSRC), Calcutta.
Contemporary Indian Christianity, due to the conflicting and sometimes antagonistic cross currents, both in the Indian Polity as well as in our socio-cultural milieu, is poised at a critical juncture. In this situation it is necessary that Indian Church reiterates and rethink the concept of mission.

Malay Dewanji ( E-mail : malaydewanji@gmail.com Mobile Phone :9830082476 ) joined with the William Carey Study and Research Centre (WCSRC), 14/2, Sudder Street, Kolkata-700016, in 1978, established under the auspices of Sreerampore College, West Bengal, and have worked as Senior Asst. Director, responsible for the Caste- class Studies and Social Action Programme, in the whole Eastern India, up to 31st October, 2006.
In the field of study and research, he has written more than 100 research papers and articles on various issues especially on people’s empowerment especially children’s rights, development and empowerment and public administration, which are being presented in different national and international Seminars and Conferences and published in both national and international magazines.
He has completed his doctoral research study on “THE PROBLEMS OF STREET CHILDREN: A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF KOLKATA”, and got Ph. D. degree, from Sri Satya Sai University of Technology & Medical Sciences, Sehore, Madhya Pradesh.
He became the founder of the Liberal Association for Movement of People (LAMP), ( Website: www.lamp-ngo-india.in) and Gana Unnayan Parshad (www.gup-ngo-india.org),which are now two large national level voluntary organisations, supported by various ministries of the Govt. of India. Govt. of West Bengal and many other national and international agencies including the UN bodies.
He has been successful to present Research papers on the problems of the Street and working children, children of commercial sex workers and other vulnerable children , in various international seminars and conferences held in Humbolt University, Berlin, University of Victoria, Canada, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow and many other places, in last three years.
He has been successfully working as the Guide for the Students of Social Work of the Hindholm Seminarium, and the National School of Social Work, Denmark, University Sealand, Denmark, Department of Social Work, University of Gent, Belzium, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, Hong Kong University, Hong Kong, China, Vidyasagar School of Social Work( Affiliated with the Vidyasagar University), Kolkata, in their practical field work in India and have been also taking theoretical classes on social work and field research.
He is a life member of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), established by the Ministry of Personnel and Public Grievances, Government of India.
He is also a life member of Asiatic Society, Kolkata, which is the first learned body of whole Asia.
