Poet Jatinder Aulakh Talks About His Book ‘Fall Can’t Cease the Springs’

Akhila Saroha: I would like to begin by congratulating you on the publication of “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs.” How has the response to the book been so far?
Jatinder Aulakh:
Thank you very much Akhila, Actually readers are giving much better response beyond my expectations. I never expected that book would attract readers in such a way. In almost two month after publishing this book, I have received lots of letters and reviews from all over country. It is really a great pleasure for me that this book has included in list of best selling books.

Akhila Saroha: What led to the idea of writing “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs”? Were there any events that inspired the work?
Jatinder Aulakh:
If someone has different perspectives from others, than his experience will be different. He will not be accepted by the society. People may create distance from him. This may send someone in pessimist and many times in depression. Search of permanent happiness from inner soul sends me on soul’s journey. After reading my stories and article some friends gave me advices that I should start to write next book from the ending point of this novel. I want to define human’s relationship with nature and the God. Today’s most of our problems have arisen from our broken connection with nature. In modern age humanity is not living in satisfaction instead they are facing self created complexity. Instead of obeying we started to govern nature. Defining self identity and quest for searching our roots in nature inspired me to write this story.

Akhila Saroha: You mention in “Nightmare and Sunshine” that “book refers to the very real, existing people also, who hoped and survived with troubling, hard to maintain sanity amidst the unknowable-knowable chaos.” How did you concoct content on the lives of all these people?Jatinder Aulakh: Characters and plot of this novel is not common for today’s man because this story is based on mythology, culture, beliefs and lifestyle of ancient Indian people. Their thinking and living habits are not same as people of modern age. So creating characters was not easy for me.

I have spent many years of my life to exploring Ancient places and Indian mythology.  My first book ‘Majha In Ancient Ages’ was also based on ancient history and mythology.  Only one main character leads the story but others persons only come in his contact for helping him to moving ahead toward his purpose. I have concentrated on theme and created the characters according it.

Akhila Saroha: You have kept the content within the framework of 6 chapters. How easy or difficult was it for you to keep the content focused and at the same time also share minute details in “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs”?
Jatinder Aulakh:
This is my first novel, readers of Punjabi language knows that i can’t give extra unnecessary explanation to my writings. Truth is that I didn’t write it joyfully, this story gave me great depression.  Main nameless character Whom  I characterized as ‘I’ carried my wandering and unquenched thirst of my mind.

Second reason of less explanation is that I want to keep this story simple, interested which can attract readers easily, and I am successful in my purpose.

Akhila Saroha: Are there any authors that you enjoy reading or any books which are your favorites?
Jatinder Aulakh:
I always prefer literature with spiritual contents. Dalai Lama, Thach Nan Hat, Guru Nanak Dev, John Banyan, Tolstoy, Saint Marium Braham, Palo Calio etc are in my favorite list. Philosophy of Bible is main source of inspiration for me. This is really a wonderful book.

Akhila Saroha: Do you think calling “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs” a work that holds meaning for everyone would be right?
Jatinder Aulakh:
I am not sure that which kind of readers can be get more attraction from this book. But people, whom are struggling to define their identity in this world or adventure lovers surely like this book. Reader’s response is telling that those like adventure and spirituality at one place are more attracted.

Akhila Saroha: “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs” has given a powerful introduction to your potential as a writer. Can the readers expect more from you in the future?
Jatinder Aulakh:
I have been constantly exploring the corner of my soul. Many questions always bother my mind and in my first book I tried to give philosophical tone to restlessness of my life. I will write new book in new way. I am always willing to do something different from others.

Akhila Saroha: The title, “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs,” sounds quite intriguing on first reading. What is the story behind the making of it
Jatinder Aulakh:
Main character of the story not carried spiritual quest but his life is abandoned from every where. He has no hope. He faced killing depression but a dim ray of hope inspires him to continue life’s journey. Readers are telling this interesting story but this is a reflection of my life. I never allowed depression to grab my dim hope.

Akhila Saroha: Do you think “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs” can be restricted to any particular genre? Or can it be categorized under more than one genre?
Jatinder Aulakh:
It is not so easy to categorized this book with particular genre because its contents contains many things which uncommon in Indian fiction. This story giving clues about Trade and simple life of ancient people, adventure and spirituality, also this story giving great hope for those that are going through dark time. So it’s difficult to categorize the book in any specific genre.

Akhila Saroha: “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs” follows a fictional narrative but the events seem based on reality closely. What would you say on that?
Jatinder Aulakh:
I mentioned previously that I have spent many years of my life to explore local mythology and ancient history. I begin this book with a story from local mythology. Many events of my book come from my personal experience. I gave fictitiously touch to these events and my personal experiences.

Akhila Saroha: If you were to describe “Fall Can’t Cease the Springs” in a few words without giving any spoilers, what would those words be?
Jatinder Aulakh:
This book has special status for those whose goes into despair.  This can give new directions to dilapidated point of view.

Akhila Saroha: Is there any message which you would want to convey to your readers? Or any advice if they intend to venture into writing?
Jatinder Aulakh:
Sacred text related all religion giving freedom to our thought and helping to break down our mental and all kind of bondage. Life of main character of my book rejected all theories and retentions and went for search in their own philosophy. Search of mind and spirit and deliverance from traditional thinking is basic to be a good writer.

Akhila Saroha: Thank you very much for sparing your time. I look forward to reading more books from you in the future. All the best.
Jatinder Aulakh:
Thank you very much. All the questions you have put were really wonderful and it shows your great ability to search through the book. I heartily thanks to you.
