The book Principles and Practices of Management is designed for B.Com 2nd Semester students under Gauhati University, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It provides a structured and comprehensive understanding of fundamental management concepts, theories, and their real-world applications. The book follows an outcome-based approach, ensuring conceptual clarity and skill development.
The syllabus is divided into five well-structured units:
-Unit 1: Introduction to Management Theories – Covers classical, neo-classical (Hawthorne Experiments, Mary Parker Follet), and modern theories, including Systems and Contingency approaches. It also highlights the contributions of Peter Drucker to modern management and Michael Porter’s Five Forces Analysis.
– Unit 2: Planning– Focuses on planning premises, elements, and limitations, along with environmental analysis and SWOT analysis (concepts and elements).
– Unit 3: Motivation – Explores key motivation theories, including Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, McGregor’s Theory X and Y, Goal-Setting Theory, and Reinforcement Theory.
– Unit 4: Leadership – Discusses leadership theories such as Trait, Situational, and Behavioral approaches, along with contemporary perspectives. It also covers Blake & Mouton’s Managerial Grid, and the distinction between Transactional and Transformational Leadership.
– Unit 5: Contemporary Issues in Management – Examines modern challenges like digitization, automation, AI, globalization, and workplace diversity. It also introduces Indian ethos in management, drawing lessons from Indian heritage, Vedas, and Kautilya’s Arthashastra.
