ABOUT THE BOOK
Perovskite and related structures are well known for their unusual physical properties arising from strong correlations in metal oxides. The LaMnO3 compound having perovskite structure hot topic for condensed matter physics research because of the colossal magnetoresistance phenomenon. Traditionally oxides were considered electrically insulating materials, in which the oxygen ions have fully occupied 2p states, corresponding thus to the valence state O2-. However, a substitution with a stable valence different from the one of a substituted ion, the result is an oxide with a mixed valence. A typical example is provided by the mixed valence manganite perovskites R1-xMxMnO3 where R is trivalent rare-earth ion (R=La, Pr, Nd …) and M is the divalent alkaline-earth (M=Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb etc…). It has been proved that the average size of A-site cations and their size distribution have significant effects on the properties of manganites.
